hey all,

I wonder why [those who don't love C & H] are so in denial that Calvin is actually burdened with some psychotic features or at least has a mental health crisis going on. I mean, he can't tell what's real half the time and he has a ways to go before you'd say he was teacher's pet material. Of course, that doesn't turn off Suzy completey. His parents aren't blind to it. They have talked about taking him to a therapist. Why be defensive about it? Some enlightenment comes with altered perception of things. Hobbes isn't the only one of the pair who spouts like Rumi.

Levels of Abstraction

I was re-reading "Scientific Progress Goes Boink" today, and I noticed the beautiful painting on the back cover. It shows C&H zooming through the Jurassic Era in their time machine, which is actually a cardboard box. But what I realized today for the first time is that the box is shown as a box, and not as a high-tech machine. When Calvin is imagining he is Spaceman Spiff, he has a cool-looking spaceship...but when they go time traveling in their box, it's still a box.

One of the many things I love about Bill Watterson's work is that he makes me think about things like this. What's going on in Calvin's imagination? Why does he see Hobbes as alive, for example, and the box as just a cardboard box? I find it somehow liberating to put my brain back inside my 6-year-old inner child and try to follow the logic. Fun!

memories

I've always read to my sons. When the oldest one discovered Calvin and Hobbes, the books became favorite bedtime reading. The boys were maybe 11 and 6. They wouldn't always get the humor, so I had to explain. The youngest called 'em "Calvin and the Hobbes." I smile when I think of those days, ten years ago now. (Now, I'm asking them to explain the lyrics in the music they listen to.)

Tell us some of your memories of reading the greatest comic strip ever.

True story:
Last night I actually had a dream of Calvin's baby-sitter. But i wasn't how you think. (damn!) dON'T ASK ME TO EXPLAIN THE 3D-2D Conversitions, and mergers. But she is sooo real to me, being 15 when i first started reading C&H. God, sometimes i would actually try some of her tecniques with some of the kids in my neighborhood. :)

about the dream...well she was a background character...told you it wasn't what you thought! :)
